Story identification
This is a follow-on to my post a few days ago about alternative casting (btw, did you see that every action movie star in Hollywood was considered for the John McClane role in Die Hard - inc. Harrison Ford and Sylvester Stallone?).

There is a Tim Pratt story wherein he meets a girl from an alternative universe wherein all this alternative casting actually happened.

Anybody have any idea what that story is called?

Sounds a lot like Last Action Hero with Arnold Schwarzenegger. The kid drags Jack Slater (Arnold in the movie universe) to the Blockbuster to show him the Terminator DVD, and there is the big standup of the Terminator in the store...Sylvester Stallone as the Terminator.

The project was originally intended for Frank Sinatra, who'd played Joe Leland in the movie version of Roderick Thorp's novel The Detective (Die Hard was adapted from its sequel, Nothing Lasts Forever). Leland eventually morphed into McClane.

I have waited for this day every since The Interwebs began.

I *have* this piece of information! For ONCE I can actually answer a question on the Interwebs! Whee!

I stumbled across this just yesterday, and not only does it give you the name of the story, it links you to a short film produced based on the story!!!

Impossible Dreams by Tim Pratt.

Terry! Terry! Terry!

Oh my gosh - that is really really awesome. You were spot on - that was EXACTLY the story I was thinking of.... and I got to mention it during the panel at Boskone last night. Thank you so much.

And I totally understand what you mean by waiting for that day when someone asks something that you know... Yes, indeed.

Congrats, Terry - you're awesome!
